We will be focusing on 9 compositions for this class.

1. Horizontal-Produces a feeling of peace and harmony. Adds depth and space to a painting

3. Diagonal-Use for movement and intensity

4. Cruciform

5. Cantilever

6. S Curve

7. Triangle

8. Scattered

9. Overlapping (grid)

Additional compositions-Radiating, Organic marks or meandering, Circular, Strata, Unbalanced, Balanced, Group mass, Curvilinear, Spot Triangular, Tension, Constellation, Asymetrical, L composition, etc.

The Golden Mean (AKA rule of thirds) for your focal point

I create with total abandon when I start my art. I don’t try to analyze or determine any direction until I am at least 3/4 of the way through the process.

Layer, texture, line, and bold strokes to start.

Ways to emphasize your focal point

1. Pop of color (accent color 10% or less)

2. Leading lines (could be trees, roads, etc.

3. Change of scale-Use a large bold area to signify importance

4. Creating differences-size, color, shape, etc

5. Put more negative space around the focal point

6. Use of pattern to highlight

I’m excited to offer the following classes for beginners to advanced painters. Class sizes are limited to six students and will encourage exploration of mixed media supplies and techniques. My classes focus on layering, texture, movement, and openness to experimenting with mixing your art supplies to create incredible results.

Classes are structured for learning techniques and concepts that will give you the freedom to move forward in pursuing your own art. This is not a structured “wine and paint” style class, but a class that will give you foundational elements for creating your personal style. Classes include technique demonstrations as well as independent working time for you.

All supplies including top quality paints and substrates are provided in the cost below.

I invite you to join me in my studio on five acres of natural beauty in the foothills of Washougal, WA.

For all classes please bring rubber gloves to protect your hands if desired. Wear old clothes and

bring a lunch and beverage (refrigerator and microwave are available in the studio).
